India’s many contributions to the English Language.
In 1762 the English Language adopted the word ‘Shampoo’ derived from Hindi chāmpo. Shampoo itself was introduced as a head massage, usually consisting of Alkali, natural oils and fragrances. Introduced in Britain by Sake Dean Mahomed, in Basil Cochrane’s 19th century vapour baths. Later, together with his Irish wife, he opened “Mahomed’s Steam and Vapour Sea Water Medicated Baths” in Brighton, England.
In the 1860s, the early stages of shampoo, English hair stylists boiled shaved soap in water and added herbs to give the hair shine and fragrance. The first known recognized maker of shampoo is Kasey Hebert. It wasn’t until the 20th Century that Shampoo was commercially available.
Shampoo as it is known today was first introduced in the 1930s.
